Eskom is set to implement stage 3 of power interruptions from 2 pm on Friday and is expected to last until 05:00 on Monday, 10 March.
The power provider said in a statement that this decision was made after a 2700MW loss over the previous 14 hours, which impaired the power supply’s 98% availability.
“This includes Koeberg Unit 2, which was taken offline after being brought back on Wednesday and two Kusile units whose coal operations went sub-optimal following adverse weather in the area,” said Eskom in a statement.
Higher levels of planned maintenance outages are still in progress, according to the power provider, with the goal of preparing for winter and fulfilling legal and environmental licensing requirements.
High levels of planned maintenance will continue to be performed throughout the weekend in order to restock emergency supplies.
Eskom Group Executive Generation Bheki Nxumalo says as Eskom they would like to stress once more that load shedding in South Africa is not going to return to its 2023 levels.
“Two years into delivering the generation recovery plan, that will bring an end to load shedding, we are at a challenging time and the full force of our highly skilled engineering resources are deployed and focussed,” said Nxumalo.
Last month load shedding was implemented on February 20, 2025, after 323 days of uninterrupted power supply.
