Management: The newly appointed University of Limpopo Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr. Jeffrey Mabelebele

Mankweng – The University of Limpopo is stepping into a promising new era with the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Mabelebele as its new Vice-Chancellor and Principal. On the 11th of July 2025, the institution announced that Mabelebele will succeed Prof. Mahlo Mokgalong with effect from the 1st of January 2026. With a strong track record in higher education and a vision to innovate, Dr. Mabelebele is poised to make significant contributions to the university’s mission and objectives.

Dr. Mabelebele brings with him a wealth of experience in academic leadership, having previously held various key positions within the educational landscape. His appointment has generated excitement among faculty, students, and stakeholders alike, all eager to see how his leadership will shape the future of the university.

According to Chairperson of the University Council, Mr. Pandelani Nefolovhodwe, the Council expresses full confidence in the appointment of Dr. Mabelebele, who emerged as the leading candidate following a rigorous and competitive recruitment process. His appointment received strong endorsement from both the University Senate and the Institutional Forum.

“Dr. Mabelebele demonstrated a profound understanding of the University’s core project in teaching and learning, research, and community engagement and articulated a clear strategy for enhancing financial sustainability.” said Nefolovhodwe.

Dr. Mabelebele is a seasoned higher education executive with a distinguished record of service, having previously held the following positions:

• Chief Executive Officer of Higher Education South Africa (HESA), now Universities South Africa (USAf),

• Registrar of the University of Limpopo, and

• Currently serving as Registrar and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

The university extends its deep appreciation to Prof. Mokgalong, who has dedicated more than five decades of exemplary service to the institution.

“Professor Mokgalong joined the University 54 years ago and has served in numerous roles, from junior researcher to lecturer, dean, and ultimately vice-chancellor and principal. Today, we are proud to affirm that he leaves behind a financially sound institution, administratively accountable, and academically flourishing.” said Nefolovhodwe.
