Ga Maja – Meet Mapula Mailula (29), fondly known as Miley from Ga Maja Kopermyn. The young and innovative entrepreneur developed the Crime and Emergency App to assist crime victims in reporting crimes and emergencies quickly.

In an age where technology continuously shapes our daily lives, an innovative solution to safety and security has emerged, thanks to the vision of Mapula, who recognises the increasing concerns about crime and emergencies in her community.

Mapula, who holds an ideal knowledge in Computer Application Technology, told Limpopo Insider that the Crime and Emergency App will connect them with local authorities and support services. The app also includes features like a location tracker, emergency contact notifications, and a virtual panic button, which, when activated, sends signals to the authorities about the user’s location and situation.

The inspiration behind the app came after a series of troubling incidents in Mapula’s life, as she was once a victim of crime.

“I witnessed criminal activities close to me and in my village, and I couldn’t report them to the police because unfortunately they take long time to respond and arrive at the crime scene or not even come at all. It became clear to me that we needed a solution to help individuals feel safer and more connected to their emergency service providers,” she said.

The app is already available after months of rigorous testing. Mapula believes that stakeholders will support her to have it ready to be used by the public.

“The only time when the app will be fully operational is when all the stakeholders, including South African Police Services, EMS, and firefighters, are on board,” she added.

The Crime and Emergency App exemplifies the power of innovative thinking combined with a deep understanding of community needs. Mapula’s story serves as a reminder that with determination and creativity, individuals can indeed make a difference in the world around them. As communities face ongoing challenges related to safety and emergency preparedness, tools like the Crime and Emergency App will undoubtedly play a crucial role in fostering secure environments for all.

“Sometimes the police don’t know your exact location as a crime victim no matter how much you describe your location; this app will help police locate you swiftly and rescue you,” said Mapula. “People die waiting for the police or emergency services to save them; the app will have EMS and firefighter options for the user to choose in the event of emergency need,” she highlighted.

Mapula remains committed to enhancing the app’s features and expanding its reach. Future updates are set to include partnerships with local law enforcement and nonprofit organisations, aimed at fostering strong community ties and proactive strategies for crime prevention.
